#445249 They turn on a solid axle
Posted by Frank Lemire on Tuesday Mar 21, 2017 at 06:14AM in response to #445245
just like the wheels they replaced.

Most resin cars use solid metal axles for the front and rear wheels. If you are lucky the wire wheels will just press fit on the existing axles once you remove the stock wheels. Generally though you are not that lucky and either some type of shim has to be used or if the stock axle is too thick you need to replace the original axles with ones that fit the wire wheels. I've collected a pretty fair inventory of metal and plastic rods over the years and find it easy to just make new axles that fit the wire wheels. Be careful though, wire wheels can be fragile and trying to muscle them onto an axle can result in destruction of the wheel.

To prevent damage, I have on several occasions glued the wheels to the ends of the axles. I prefer to use a weak glue to do that (like glue from a glue stick) so I can remove the wheels at a future date without damage to the wheel.
