#446277 Storage in a garage
Posted by workhurts on Tuesday Sep 26, 2017 at 08:53AM
I have too many models and the associated boxes which I've always kept indoors in larger cardboard boxes. Usually 10 boxes or so to the larger cardboard box. Now, I have about 20 storage boxes in the house. I'd like to move them to the garage which isn't a conditioned space. So humidity, heat, cold ... etc.

What's the 100% best way to keep the model boxes from going funky/moldy or degrading over time? I bought some storage racks that hand from the ceiling that would keep everything elevated but have no idea whether I should do it or not. I was thinking doing one of the following or some combination:

1 - Wrap each model box in a plastic bag and put back in the cardboard boxes. Not sure if the bag has to be air tight or some coverage is better than none. Throw some of those moisture absorbent packets in there.

2 - Same as 1, except wrap much better.

3 - Get some large plastic storage bins with lids. I don't think those are air tight though but maybe using something like that in conjunction with 1 or 2 would be better than keeping everything in larger cardboard boxes that absorb moisture themselves

4 - Don't bother.

Keep in mind these boxes are worth thousands. Exoto/CMC/AutoArt etc ... if you figure not having a box might lose you 30% of the value of a sale then keeping them safe makes sense.

What are your thoughts?
