I think it just makes sense to do inspections as that can potentially avoid problems as you've said. There are a few eBay sellers who I've asked if they can do this extra but relatively simple step and they said no, due to the fact that the box will be "opened". Duh!? Quite frankly I don't mind paying a little extra just so I can ensure that I'm getting something that I wouldn't be disappointed with.
