Ferrari ‘privateer’ racing teams were looking for a replacement for their now long in the tooth 365 GTB Daytonas and convinced Ferrari to modify their 512 ‘Boxter’ for racing at le Mans in 1978.
Ahead of the 1978 season, four examples of the uprated five-litre 512 BB were prepared with the specific aim to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The driving forces behind this project were the same prominent privateers that had represented Ferrari for many years; Belgian importer Jacques Swaters (Ecurie Francorchamps), Charles Pozzi of Ferrari France and of course Luigi Chinett's North American Racing Team, who had also fielded the 365 GT4 BB on both sides of the Atlantic.
The cars were largely ‘stock’ with a more aerodynamic front and a bolt on wing in the rear. None of the cars lasted the race as the mostly stock transmissions failed. The N.A.R.T. entry was actually leading the IMSA GTX category when its transmission gave out at the 19 hour mark.
The cars showed enough promise that the Ferrari factory started working on an improved follow up, the 512 BB/LM

And yes Tecnomodel cars are overpriced but this car is not likely to be made by anyone else so I went for it.
