I recently read a 1985 Road & Track magazine comparison test of the Corolla GT-S (the US version of the AE66) along with the VW Golf GTI, Dodge Omni GLH, Mitsubishi Mirage Turbo, Honda Civic S and the Renault Encore GS.
When they added up the points in all the categories the Corolla GT-S was tied with the Golf GTI for the top spot but the “rather drive” preferences of all the testers broke the tie and made the Corolla come out the winner.
